Quang Tri Province in north-central Vietnam has called on private investors to pour a combined VND14.7 trillion (US$602 million) into various projects to promote its night-time economy from now until 2030.

The provincial administration chaired a meeting on Wednesday to discuss a night-time economy development scheme for the 2023-25 period, with a vision toward 2030.

The province has potential for developing a night-time economy, which is expected to promote its image, create jobs, and contribute to the local coffers, said Hoang Nam, vice-chairman of the provincial People’s Committee.

However, the night-time economy in Quang Tri remains underdeveloped due to a lack of proper investment.

Its shops and eateries mostly close around 10:00 pm or 11:00 pm, while night markets and pedestrian streets do not open regularly and remain unattractive to tourists.

Some night markets in the provincial capital city of Dong Ha were short-lived due to poor sales, whereas a pedestrian street in Quang Tri Town only opens on weekend evenings.

The provincial Department of Culture, Sport, and Tourism earlier pilotted night tours to some historical relic sites such as Quang Tri Ancient Citadel but failed to lure tourists.

Therefore, the province is seeking to develop and offer new, significant tourism products and services at night as part of its night-time economy development scheme, which requires VND14.8 trillion ($605.772 million), including VND100 billion ($4 million) backed by the state budget and the rest funded by private sources.

The province calls on investors to channel funds into such tourism projects as a VND2-trillion ($81.7 million) commercial service and entertainment center in Dong Ha City, a VND1-trillion ($40.8 million) Lao Bao international border gate service center in Huong Hoa District, a VND4-trillion ($163.6 million) resort complex in Gio Linh District, and many others.

From now until 2025, the province will launch around four pedestrian streets where visitors can enjoy entertainment services, art and cultural performances, and food specialties overnight in Dong Ha City, Quang Tri, Town and Lao Bao Town on a trial basis, in addition to opening at least two shopping centers and food streets.

Quang Tri Province also looks to woo two million visitors to take part in the night-time activities, expand at least four pedestrian streets, night markets, and shopping venues by 2030.
