Adani Group, an Indian multinational conglomerate, is working with Vietnam’s low-cost air carrier Vietjet to conduct a pre-feasibility study on upgrades to Chu Lai Airport in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam.
Le Van Dung, chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, told a press briefing on Wednesday that the Indian firm and the Vietnamese airline got involved in the pre-feasibility study following Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to India in late July.
The prime minister passed a plan to upgrade Chu Lai Airport using private funding in 2022, according to chairman Dung.
No firms have officially invested in upgrading the airport, though some have conducted pre-feasibility studies.
“If Adani and Vietjet have a successful pre-feasibility study, they might proceed with the project,” said Dung.

Chu Lai Airport is assessed as one of Vietnam’s three largest airports in terms of area, with over 2,000 hectares of cleared land.
“Its huge area will facilitate investment in the project so that it can become an international airport and potentially the country’s biggest goods transshipment hub,” he said.
The province is willing to welcome investors to the Chu Lai airport project.
Chu Lai Airport was slated to become an international airport with a design capacity of 10 million passengers per year during the 2021-30 period.
As part of his visit to India from July 30 to August 1, PM Chinh met with Gautam Adani, founder and chairman of Adani Group, which specializes in energy and infrastructure.
