A 31-year-old man from Vinh Phuc Province in northern Vietnam has been fined VND29 million (US$1,130) for allowing his six-year-old daughter to steer a car on a local road.
The Traffic Police Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday evening announced that police officers had imposed the fine on D.V.N., a resident of Thien Ke Commune in Binh Xuyen District, for letting an unqualified individual to drive a car on the road.
The penalty came after a video surfaced on local social media on Monday, showing the car being controlled by a young girl traveling at a speed of some 40 kilometers per hour.
In the nearly-one-minute clip, the man encourages the girl by saying, “B. is driving the car and taking your dad somewhere, alright? You’re steering so well. That’s awesome.”
The department immediately instructed police in Hanoi and Vinh Phuc Province to work together to investigate and identify the individuals involved.

At the police station, N. admitted that at the time of the incident, he was sitting in the driver’s seat while his daughter was seated in the front. He allowed the girl to grip the steering wheel and steer the vehicle.
“This is a reckless violation of traffic safety regulations and poses a grave danger to both the child and other commuters on the road,” said an officer.
Following the investigation and his statements, police confirmed that N. had committed the offense of permitting an unqualified individual to operate the vehicle.
As per Decree 168/2024, the fine for this violation is set between VND28 million ($1,090) and VND30 million ($1,170).
