After three previous successful seasons, Luala concert, a street show which is an ingenious blend of Vietnamese folk music with new western genres, will make its way back to Hanoi sidewalks.

The shows, directed by artist Nguyen Nhat Ly, will go on at 61 Ly Thai To street at 3-5 pm starting today, Apr 20.

A mesmerizing blend between Vietnamese folk music and new western genres, the street concert is a rendezvous between revered traditional artistes, including Thanh Hoai, Xuan Hoach and Le Xuan Quy, and young, promising artists such as singer-composer Le Cat Trong Ly and the Phu Sa band.

The performances will see the inventive fuse of modern genres such as jazz, electronic music, contemporary music for piano and ‘nomadic’ music with cai luong (renovated southern folk music) and hat van (northern folk music).

According to Do Ngoc Minh, the program’s initiator and sponsor, this year’s spring-summer 2013 concert, which will be cut down to three weeks, with two shows each week, will be highly improvisational and packed with nice surprises.

In each show, the organizers will introduce an experimental genre to the audience through solo and various-artist performances.

Debuted in Hanoi in 2011, Luala Concert is a free music event to introduce to audiences avant-garde music genres. Previous seasons’ concerts on Hanoi streets drew from 300 to 400 locals and foreigners in a wide age bracket.

The program has two performing periods, namely the Autumn-Winter shows for classical music and the Spring-Summer ones for mostly experimental music.
