Local audiences to meet famed Japanese violist again

Nobuko Imai, one of the world’s leading violists, will perform in a program called “Japan Concert Tour”, set to take place tomorrow in Hanoi.

The program, which will feature Imai and violinists Miyazaki Tomona and Watanabe Reiko performing works by French composer Saint- Saens and Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov, will be held at the Hanoi Opera House at 8pm on May 23.

A concerto for violins by local composer Dam Linh titled “Dragon- Thang Long, Hanoi” will also be performed.

Another concert called “The Apotheosis of Dance”, which also featured violist Imai, was held at the Hanoi Opera House on May 16 and 17.

Nobuko Imai, born in 1943 in Tokyo, boasts an extensive career as a soloist and chamber musician.

Imai began her training at Tokyo's Toho Gakuen School of Music before going to the US, where she studied at the Juilliard School and Yale University.

The accomplished artist has won the “Young Concert Artists International Auditions” in 1967, the “Geneva International Music Competition”, and the “ARD International Music Competition” in Munich.

A former member of the Vermeer Quartet and the founder of the Michaelangelo Quartet, Imai’s discography includes more than 30 releases.

She has also pocketed several awards including the Avon Arts Award (1993), Japan's Suntory Music Award (1995), and the Mainichi Award of Arts (1996).
