An American expat who has lived in Vietnam for over four years has recently released a music video featuring a song by world-renowned Vietnamese composer Trinh Cong Son on the 13th anniversary of his death.
Kyo York, who has worked in Vietnam as an English teacher, singer, and actor and speaks impeccable Vietnamese, released Monday his latest music video, ‘Ha Trang,’ which features one of Son’s hallmark songs in both Vietnamese and English.
York’s video is one of the numerous activities and events going on in Ho Chi Minh City to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the revered composer’s death, on April 1, 2001.
The video, the result of York’s nonprofit project, has been launched online and enjoyed by Son’s fans.
“I had been infatuated with Son’s haunting music years before I decided to become a professional singer. I’ve practiced quite hard to perform several of his iconic songs such as ‘Diem Xua’ and ‘Ha Trang,’” he shared.
Trinh Cong Son passed away at age 60 to the shock and profound grief of thousands of his fans, who are Vietnamese and foreign alike.
The BBC also covered his funeral, which was attended by several thousands of mourners.
Trinh Cong Son has been added into the Encyclopedia Britannica, which highlights him as one of the country’s eminent composers, along with Pham Duy and Van Cao.
Son’s music is well loved by local and international fans for its haunting melodies and profound lyrics. Several of his iconic songs have been translated and performed in other languages.
During his relatively brief lifetime, Son composed roughly 600 songs, mostly love songs, of which 236 are widely known. He was also an amateur poet and artist.
The composer used to live in Trinh shed in Hue, which provided him with an endless source of artistic inspiration during his youth and is now home to his many photos and mementos.
A show, “Nhung Som Mai Vietnam” (The Vietnamese Mornings), designed to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the composer’s death, is set to take place from 4:00 pm on April 5 at the Crescent area in District 7. It will also be broadcast later on HTV7, HTV9, and VTV4.
