The Nguyen Hue Flower Street in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, created annually to celebrate the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, was teeming with visitors during the opening night on Saturday.

After the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:00 pm, joined by key municipal government leaders, people began flooding into Nguyen Hue, which is florally adorned during Tet.

Stretching 720 meters, the street consists of three sections thematically called ‘Lovely City Steeped in Cultural Identity,’ ‘Smart City’ and ‘Creative Municipality.’

Placed in the middle of the road are the flower-surrounded statues of what is known as a nine-pig family going shopping for Tet, next to a seven-meter-tall structure resembling Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic Ben Thanh Market.

The 2.9-meter father pig dons a black-and-white checkered head scarf while the mother wears a conical hat and the traditional outfit of ao dai.

These items characterize the clothing and headwear of people in southwestern Vietnam, although the scarf’s popularity has waned.

The pig is figuring prominently in the street decoration design as it is the zodiacal animal of the upcoming lunar year, which starts on Tuesday next week.

The street also features six giant pig statues with different pictures drawn on their bodies.

Visitors can admire a canoe full of flowers next to undulating structures that symbolize waves, and a scene that mimics aquatic life.

The flower street, now in its 16th edition, is open to the public through 10:00 pm on February 8.
