A Vietnamese designer is quickly becoming a household name in the global fashion scene as some of the world’s top celebs donned his work on tour and at awards shows.

On September 22, Julia Garner made her appearance at the 2019 Emmy Awards in an exquisite purple gown designed by Nguyen Cong Tri. She won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Styled by Elizabeth Saltzma, Garner “positively glowed in a vibrant purple, single-sleeved Cong Tri gown,” The Hollywood Reporter reported, declaring Garner among the top ten best dressed women at the awards.

The Ozark actress is not the first celeb spotted in a Nguyen Cong Tri design. 

The 41-year-old fashion designer, based in Ho Chi Minh City, has an impressive list of clients featuring some of the hottest names in the entertainment industry, including Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Camila Cabello, Gwen Stefani, Rita Ora, and Jacqueline Fernandez.

In July this year, Beyoncé wore a golden pleated gown by Tri to the Lion King premiere in London.

One month earlier, Karen Fairchild from the American country music group Little Big Town stunned fans in a Nguyen Cong Tri dress at the 2019 CMT Music Awards.

In March, British singer Rita Ora also chose three dresses by Tri, two for her performance in Sydney during her Phoenix world tour and at MTV Re:define in Texas.

Kary Perry is also a serious Nguyen Cong Tri fan. 

In December 2019, Nguyen Cong Tri and 20 members of his design team spent 24 hours finalizing a crystal-studded blue dress for Perry to put on in the music video for Immortal Flame.

Previously, the American singer had been spotted multiple times wearing costumes by Nguyen Cong Tri both on stage and as a judge in the 2018 season of American Idol.

English model Naomi Campbell is also fond of Nguyen Cong Tri designs.

During her trip to Vietnam in mid- 2018, the model surprised a friend by wearing an ao dai (Vietnamese traditional gown) designed by Nguyen Cong Tri to an event in the southern city of Can Tho.

In July 2017, Rihanna caused a stir in Vietnam by posting a photo in which she wore a design by Tri to promote her “So Stoned” collection with Spanish shoe brand Manolo Blahnik.

The picture has so far earned more than 1.8 million likes from the singer’s followers.

Nguyen Cong Tri was born in 1978 in the central city of Da Nang and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in industrial design, according to information published on his website.

Throughout his years working in the fashion industry, Tri has showcased his collections at events in Vietnam and abroad, including Vietnamese International Fashion Week in 2017, Tokyo Fashion Week in 2016, and New York Fashion Week in 2019.

In 2014, he was the first Vietnamese member acknowledged by Asia Couture Federation.

Tri’s designs are also popular choices by Vietnamese celebrities.
