Vietnam has been honored with four important prizes, including Asia’s Leading Destination, by the 26th World Travel Awards (WTA).

The World Travel Awards Asia and Oceania 2019 was organized on Phu Quoc, a popular tourist island off the southern Vietnamese province of Kien Giang, on Saturday evening.

This is the third time the event has taken place in Vietnam.

It was previously held in the central city of Da Nang in 2016 and Phu Quoc Island in 2017.

At this year’s ceremony, Vietnam was honored with the title of Asia’s Leading Destination for the second year in a row.

The Southeast Asian country also won the awards for Asia’s Leading Culinary Destination and Asia’s Leading Cultural Destination.

Hoi An, a tourist city in the central province of Quang Nam and home to Hoi An Ancient Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was named Asia's Leading Cultural City Destination.

National carrier Vietnam Airlines, conglomerate Vingroup, tourist company Vietravel, and some other representatives from Vietnam also won many awards in different categories.

According to Nguyen Trung Khanh, head of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the awards reflect the recognition of international tourists and experts regarding Vietnam’s tourism development, cuisine, and culture.

Statistics from the tourism administration showed that 12.9 million international visitors had arrived in Vietnam in the first nine months of 2019.

Organizers of the WTA also announced that Vietnam has been nominated for six ‘World’s Leading’ categories.

The winners of these grand titles will be crowned in Muscat, Oman on November 28.

The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward, and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourist, and hospitality industries.
