A submarine, called the Hai Phong, will dock at Cam Ranh Port in the central province of Khanh Hoa on Wednesday (December 10, 2014).

The Admiralty Verfi Shipyard has handed over the third in a series of six submarines the Russian submarine manufacturer is building for Vietnam under a contract signed in 2009, and the submarine is expected to arrive at Cam Ranh on December 10, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

The 636 Varshavyanka (Kilo)-class submarine, powered by both electric and diesel engines, will be sent to Vietnam, according to the Saint Petersburg-based company.

Meanwhile, the fourth submarine in the series has been undergoing testing since June.

After the first three Kilo-class submarines, the Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong, the upcoming submarines will be called Da Nang, Khanh Hoa and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the three big coastal localities in central and south Vietnam.

According to the signed contract, the three remaining vessels will be handed over to the country in 2015 and 2016.

The Kilo-class submarine, the third generation of Russian submarines, is among the most modern such vessels in the world and is equipped with Club anti-ship missiles as well as traditional torpedoes.

The submarine has a load of 2,300 tons and can carry a crew of 57. It can operate at a maximum depth of 300 meters at a range of 6,000-7,500 nautical miles for 45 days and nights.

The vessel is armed with a Klub-S cruise missile system with 3M-54E1 missiles bearing 450-kg warheads that have a firing range of 220 km.

It also has a system of eight Strela-3 anti-aircraft missiles with a firing range of 6 km, six torpedo tubes, and other advanced military equipment.
