Vietnam lawmakers elect new prime minister

Vietnam’s new prime minister was sworn into office on Monday afternoon following a majority vote at the lawmaking National Assembly in Hanoi.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh won over 96 percent of the ballot, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
Following the voting, PM Chinh took the oath of office, swearing his allegiance to the nation, people, and constitution.
He vowed to complete all missions assigned by the Party, state, and people.

PM Chinh is a successor to Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who took office as state president on Monday morning.
Both Phuc and Chinh are members of the Politburo, which is the policymaking body of the Party.

Born in 1958 in Thanh Hoa Province, Chinh is currently the head of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Organization Commission, which is charged with nominating and approving the appointment of officials across the country.
He has held the post since February 2016.
Chinh was named Deputy Minister of Public Security in August 2010 after being promoted to the lieutenant general rank one month earlier.
He served as secretary of the Party Committee in Quang Ninh Province for the 2010-15 term.
The politician earned a PhD in law in 2000 after starting his work at the Ministry of Public Security in 1996.
He was a first secretary at the Vietnamese Embassy in Romania in 1989.
