Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay a state visit to Vietnam on Wednesday and Thursday at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday.

Vietnamese State President To Lam received Russian Ambassador to Vietnam Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko on Monday afternoon ahead of Putin’s visit.

This will be the Russian president’s second state visit to Vietnam, but it will be the fifth time he has traveled to Vietnam.

His previous visits were made in 2001, 2006, 2013, and 2017 when he attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in the central city of Da Nang.

His first state visit to Vietnam took place in November 2013, nearly one year after he was elected president of Russia.

His upcoming Vietnam visit is made in the first year of his new term as Russian president, demonstrating that he appreciates the Russia - Vietnam relationship.

Within the framework of his visit, Russian President Putin is set to attend a welcome ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi, and then have talks and meetings with Vietnam’s top officials.

The visit takes place when Vietnam and Russia mark the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Principles of Friendly Relations between the two nations (June 16).

Vietnamese and Russian leaders exchanged congratulatory letters to celebrate the 30th anniversary on Sunday.

In the letters, leaders of both nations highlighted the historic significance of the treaty, underlining its role as a pivotal document that heralded a new era of multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Russia and laid the groundwork for elevating the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Over the past three decades, generations of leaders and citizens in both countries have nurtured their steadfast friendship, bolstered and expanded bilateral ties for the benefit of the people of the two nations and for global and regional peace, cooperation and development.

The leaders of both nations also believed that the celebration would usher in a new stage of development with increased trust and more substantive and effective collaboration between the two nations.

The forthcoming visit is expected to foster bilateral cooperation in various traditional fields and emerging aspects.

Two-way trade between Vietnam and Russia in 2023 reached US$3.63 billion, up 2.3 percent year on year.

Russian investors have got involved in 186 projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital of $984.98 million, ranking Russia 28th among 145 countries and territories investing in the Southern Asian nation.

Vietnam has invested in 18 projects in Russia, with a total pledged capital of $1.63 billion.
