Managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva expressed her hope that Vietnam will work with the IMF to share its economic development experience and success story with other countries, especially those in Africa, during a meeting with Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam in New York on Tuesday.

The Vietnamese leader received Georgieva during his working trip to New York to attend the United Nations Summit of the Future and the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, along with a series of working sessions from September 21 to 24.

At the meeting, IMF managing director Georgieva affirmed that Vietnam and ASEAN as a whole are bright spots in the global economy, especially during the hard times when the global economy encounters shocks.

She said Vietnam’s resilience, adaptation, and economic growth have been backed by two firm pillars which have been reinforced for decades, including the country’s strong and ceaselessly improving institutions and the prioritization of growth while ensuring inclusiveness in formulating macroeconomic policies.

Georgieva pledged to continue supporting Vietnam in the realization of its development goals through reform and risk management as it moves toward developing into a high-income country by 2045.

For his part, Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam congratulated Georgieva on the IMF’s 80th anniversary (1944-2024).

He spoke highly of the fund’s important role in monitoring the macro-economic stability of economies and advising countries on the building of policies which stabilize their financial and monetary systems, alleviate poverty, ensure sustainable and balanced economic development, and respond to climate change.

Lam shared that Vietnam, from an underdeveloped economy, is now among the 40 largest economies in the world.

It is working toward significant milestones, such as the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 2030 and the 100th anniversary of the country’s establishment in 2045.

The Vietnamese leader asked the IMF to continue supporting Vietnam to realize that vision, promote economic restructuring, reform the growth model, conduct digital transformation and green transition, develop new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, ensure social security, and alleviate poverty in the spirit of putting people at the center and leaving no one behind.

He reiterated Vietnam’s strong commitment to continue upholding its role and responsibility in settling global issues for the sake of a peaceful and prosperous world.
