Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s attendance at the expanded BRICS Summit in Kazan City of Russia on Wednesday and Thursday demonstrates Vietnam’s responsibility, position, and stature in boosting multilateralism, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang.

This year’s expanded BRICS Summit is taking place amid a complicated global economic and political situation, Hang told local media before PM Chinh’s trip.

The global economy tends to improve but continues to encounter multiple difficulties and challenges, especially a risk of slowing growth, prolonged high inflation, and supply chain disruptions.

Climate change and traditional and non-traditional security challenges across the world have exerted an enormous impact on countries’ economic recovery and sustainable development efforts.

Moreover, new development trends, especially digital transformation, green transition, and the boom of technology and artificial intelligence, have opened up development and cooperation prospects for emerging economies, including Vietnam, according to Hang.

The expanded BRICS Summit will feature the plenary session 'BRICS and the Global South: Building a Better World Together.'

The Global South represents developing countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, in contrast to the advanced economies in the Global North.

The Vietnamese deputy minister added that leaders of economies will focus on discussing solutions to boost economic development, the cooperation between BRICS and the Global South in responding to global challenges, new development driving forces, and the voices of developing countries.

She emphasized that Prime Minister Chinh’s trip strongly affirms Vietnam's proactive and positive spirit in addressing global issues, reiterating the country's commitment to fostering multilateralism, international solidarity, and respect for the law.

It is also meant to amplify the voices of developing countries to ensure peace, cooperation, and development worldwide.

Vietnam’s participation in discussions on global issues with large and emerging economies to contribute to developing a better world affirms its position, role, and stature, Hang added.

The participation also helps introduce images of a peaceful, cooperative, and developing Vietnam which is also active in building an independent and self-reliant economy in association with extensive and effective international integration.

Through the event, Vietnam will deepen its relations with Russia and other countries, Hang said.

PM Chinh will actively participate in and make responsible contributions to the expanded BRICS Summit, Hang noted.

The event proves Vietnam's aspiration for development and its standing as a reliable and responsible partner in the global community, inspiring a desire for prosperity worldwide, according to the deputy minister.

On Wednesday morning, Prime Minister Chinh and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation departed Hanoi for the summit at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin, chair of BRICS 2024.

The trip marks the first time that PM Chinh has visited Russia since he took office and also the first time that Vietnam has participated in this annual event at the head-of-government level.

PM Chinh will attend the summit as a guest.

More than 30 leaders of countries and international organizations, including United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, have confirmed their attendance at the summit.

The expanded BRICS Summit is an important occasion in the framework of the cooperation between BRICS and developing countries.

The BRICS group was initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2006, with South Africa joining in 2010.

Early this year, BRICS was expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates while maintaining its original name.

According to the European Union, after the addition of five new members, the BRICS group now accounts for 37.3 percent of the world’s gross domestic product.
