Politics:

-- Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong announced at a conference on Monday that Vietnam has declared war against corruption and called on leaders and individuals to have high determination to eliminate the evil.

Society:

-- Police have summoned several former and incumbent officials of the Vietnam Railways Corporation as part of their investigation into allegations that a Japanese company had paid over US$780,000 in bribes to win an ODA-funded project in Vietnam.

-- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has required provincial authorities to check the quality of suspension bridges and stop using downgraded facilities to ensure traffic safety.

-- The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has requested the Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia to provide its initial report on the missing Malaysian plane (MH370 flight) and clarify media reports that Malaysia accused Vietnam of being tardy in contacting the Malaysian side when the latter did not receive any signal from the flight that went missing on March 8 with 239 people on board.

-- Chinese man Lee Jung Teng, 25, was yesterday arrested for colluding with nine others to fake authority seals and identification cards to open bank credit and ATM accounts. Police seized 230 ATM cards and 180 ID cards in the arrest.

-- Southern Vietnam may still suffer a shortage of power in the dry season this year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Business:

-- Petrolimex has announced it gained a profit of over VND1.1 trillion (US$53 million) from trading in fuel in 2013.

-- Overseas remittances to Ho Chi Minh City reached $1 billion in the first quarter of this year.

-- Indonesia has conducted a dumping investigation into the prices of steel imported from Vietnam, China, South Korea, and Japan.

-- Thailand requires Vietnamese tourists to have $700 or 20,000 Baht each in cash to be allowed to enter the former via its check point Poipet on the border with Cambodia. The Vietnam Tourism Association calls it a rude and unreasonable regulation.

Sports:

-- Spanish coach Jesus Candelas of Iran told Tuoi Tre yesterday that hosts Vietnam will face difficulties in beating his team in the quarterfinal match at the 2014 Asian Futsal Championship currently held in Ho Chi Minh City.
