Ho Chi Minh City police on Saturday detained Chuah Chow Fay, a 30-year-old Malaysian, for further investigation in to a homicide case committed by the man at a hotel in the city on Thursday.

Fay was arrested when attempting to escape to Cambodia via Moc Bai border gate in the neighboring province of Tay Ninh on Friday night after deliberately murdering a U.S. citizen at a hotel in District 5 one day earlier, local media reported.

According to initial investigation, on Thursday afternoon, Fay came to see Alexk Kwok, a 45-year-old American man, at the room No.102 in the hotel located on Tran Phu Street. The hotel's receptionist, Thach Anh Xuan, did not ask Fay to show his identification as she was acquainted with him, Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper reported.

But fifteen minutes later, after hearing unusual noises from the room, the receptionist went upstairs to knock at the door of the room only to hear a reply from someone inside, saying that they were talking to each other.

Around five minute later, Xuan received a call from Alexk Kwok who said that his friend would leave soon.

After that, the receptionist saw Fay left the hotel in a hurry with sweat covering all around his face.

After calling Alexk Kwok but receiving no answer, Xuan and another employee of the hotel  ran upstairs and used a backup key to open the room, and found that Kwok was lying in a pool of blood, Thanh Nien reported

Xuan called an ambulance and the police right after that, but Kwok died before the ambulance arrived.

The police then identified that Fay was staying at the 8th floor of a hotel on Tran Hung Dao Street, District 5, and immediately rushed there only to find that Fay had fled.

After forecasting that Fay would try to leave the country as soon as he could, the police coordinated with the border guard forces in the provinces of Tay Ninh, Long An and Tan Son Nhat Airport so that they can arrested him as soon as he got there.

After being arrested, Fay told the police that he had owed a large sum of money to a Malaysian gangster since 2011, but could not repay. The gangster forced Fay to go Vietnam to use fake Visa cards to buy goods at a supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City and then resell them to gradually repay his debt, local news website VnExpress reported.

In 2011, Fay was arrested and spent 3 years in jail in Vietnam.

After being released from prison, he went home for a while before returning to Vietnam. During this time he met and made friend with Alexk Kwok.

According to Fay, in the meeting at the hotel, Kwok Alexk asked him for a loan to buy an air ticket to go home, but Fay refused as he was looking for his wife.

The victim then made Fay angry when telling him that that his wife was unfaithful, and so Fay did not need to search for her.

During the argument, Kwok used a paper knife to attack Fay, but Fay succeeded in taking the knife from Kwok before stabbing the victim in the neck.

After killing Kwok, Fay went back to his hotel on a taxi, then brought his luggage to a hotel in District 8 to spend the night. One day later, he picked up the passenger car to Moc Bai.
