Police in the north-central Vietnamese province of Thanh Hoa have busted a football betting ring that has turned over more than VND160 billion (US$7 million) since the beginning of this year.
Officers from the police department in Tinh Gia District, Thanh Hoa, confirmed on Tuesday that they had broken up the organization and arrested ten suspects, including Tran Van Chinh, 29, considered the ring leader.
Other members of the ring arrested were Tran Dinh Long, 56, Nguyen Van Thai, 25, Pham Van Thiet, 28, Tran Hoai Nam, 26, Nguyen Van Huy, 30, Nguyen Van Luan, 29, Ho Van Khuyen, 41, Tran Van Son, 26, and Le Van Tuan, 34.
Police also conducted searches of the suspects’ homes, confiscating two computers, 11 cell phones, VND345 million ($15,134) in cash, and other relevant documents and exhibits.

Initial information reveals that the online football betting ring began operating at the beginning of this year, with transactions totaling around VND160 billion ($7 million).
Officers in Tinh Gia District have been commended for their outstanding work by the provincial Department of Police.
In late April, a similar betting ring worth nearly VND50 billion ($2.19 million) was discovered by police in Quang Dien District, located in the north-central province of Thua Thien- Hue.
