A septuagenarian has been praised by Vietnamese authorities for submitting US$2,200 in cash to police after he came across the amount in a leather bag on his way taking a grandchild to school.
Officials in Vinh Thanh Van Ward, Rach Gia City, Kien Giang Province handed a certificate of commendation to Ly Hieu Hen, 72, on Wednesday for his “good manners.”
Hen was honored for his willingness to return an old leather bag he had accidentally picked when he was taking his grandchild to school.
He found a plastic A4 size folder inside, containing personal documents and twenty-two $100 bills.
“I did not think much about the money,” he said.
“I asked my wife if the cash was real.
“She said yes and I took it to the police station. It’s not mine so I had to return it.”
Vinh Thanh Van police returned the bag together with the cash and documents to the owner, Khuu Quoc Nam, 54, living in Kien Giang, on Wednesday.
Hen has hand-written appeal or complaint forms for a living near the office of the Vinh Thanh Van People’s Committee for over 40 years.
Now the man can only earn a paltry pay as most people tend to use typing services, he said.
“I have used to sitting around here so I just come here to enjoy it, not waiting for any real customer,” Hen said smilingly.
Data show that Vietnam’s GDP per capita is estimated to reach $2,400 this year.
