A couple wearing masks have broken into a house in the north-central Vietnamese province of Thanh Hoa and kidnapped a newborn baby.
Officers from the provincial Department of Police are investigating the abduction of a 20 day-old baby girl from a home in Bac Son Ward, Bim Son Commune, on Saturday night.
Vo Van Hieu, chairman of the People’s Committee in Bac Son, confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday that the parents of the child were Le Huu Thuan and Pham Thi Thanh Huyen.
According to preliminary information, Xuan, the 66-year-old grandmother, was holding her grandchild in the living room at around 7:00 pm when a man and a woman, whose faces were covered by masks, stormed into the house.
The man threatened Xuan with a knife, while the woman forced a towel into her mouth to keep her quiet.
They grabbed Xuan by the hair and dragged her outside before snatching the infant.
The grandmother then fell to the ground after being knocked unconscious.
Huyen was in the kitchen at the time, while Thuan was picking up their eldest son.
Neighbors were unaware of the situation.
Thuan found Xuan lying on the ground when he returned home and was horrified to learn that his newborn baby girl was nowhere to be found.
Xuan was given first aid after showing symptoms of having been drugged, potentially by a substance in the towel.
Authorities later discovered a baby’s hat and a sandal possibly belonging to the kidnappers.
According to Thuan, the suspects could have been watching his family to understand their daily schedule.
The incident occurred just a few minutes after he left the house, Thuan said.
Officers are probing the case and have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
