Many sewers along the streets in Ho Chi Minh City have their entrances blocked by garbage on a regular basis, negatively impacting urban esthetics and the environment while helping cause serious flooding.

Local authorities have been scratching their heads over how to deal with the situation as littering has become a habit of many citizens.

This problem can easily be seen along Truong Sa, Bach Dang, and Trinh Hoai Duc Streets in Binh Thanh District, Ly Thai To in District 3, Su Van Hanh in District 10, Nguyen Khoai in District 4, Duong Ba Trac in District 8, and many others.

Litter is so rampant along some streets that people cannot tell whether or not there is a drain there.

Some locals even cover the sewers with plastic mattresses or cardboard in order to block the stench.

This habit is considered one of the main reasons for increasingly severe flooding in the city, as sewers cannot function the way they were designed to due to the excessive garbage.
