A female driver who fatally crashed her car into a group of stationary motorbikes at an intersection in Ho Chi Minh on Sunday has claimed she had not been drunk and attributed the entire accident to her high heels.

Nguyen Thi Nga, 46, who resides in District 12, is being investigated for her traffic violations after her BMW automobile hit five motorcycles stopping at the Hang Xanh Intersection in Binh Thanh District at around 11: 10 pm.

The car did not come to a complete halt until it slammed into a taxi.

One of the injured is in a critical condition with a poor prognosis, while two are still being treated for severe injuries. The others were slightly scratched and have been discharged.

At the police station, Nga admitted to drinking at the restaurant that she owns on Pasteur Street in District 3 prior to the incident, according to online newspaper VnExpress.

Nga often has her chauffeur take her home. The driver, however, took a day off that day, thus Nga had to drive home by herself.

The woman asserted she was completely sober during the journey.

As she approached the red light at Hang Xanh, the strap of her high heel got stuck to the gas pedal, causing her to panic and slam on the accelerator instead of the brakes, according to her statement.

But a test previously showed that Nga’s breath alcohol content was 0.94 milligrams per liter, an officer stated, adding it is impossible to stay sober at such a level.

Decree No. 46 highlights that drivers with a breath alcohol content from 0.4 milligrams per liter and higher are subject to fine of VND16 million (US$683) to VND18 million ($768). 

They will also have their driver’s licenses revoked for four to six months.
