Ho Chi Minh City recorded the highest number of divorces/separations in Vietnam in 2024, with 263,000 cases.
Following Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi documented 146,444 divorces/separations, according to the 2024 mid-term population and housing census report recently released by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam.
These are also the two most populous cities in the country.
The country recorded about 2,225,000 divorced or separated individuals in 2024, with over 963,000 men and 1,262,000 women.
The southeast region had the highest divorce/separation rate, with nearly 560,000 cases, while the Central Highlands had the lowest, with nearly 115,000 cases.
Other provinces and cities with high divorce/separation rates include Binh Duong Province with 91,000, Dong Nai Province with 82,000, Tien Giang Province with 65,000, Thanh Hoa Province with 57,000, Tay Ninh Province with 55,000, Hai Phong City with 52,000, and Nghe An Province with 45,000.
Bac Kan Province reported the lowest number of divorces/separations, with 6,417, followed by Cao Bang Province with over 7,300 cases.
The divorce/separation rate also varies significantly between rural and urban areas.
Rural areas account for 1,263,000 cases, with 592,000 men and over 671,000 women, while urban areas have 962,000 cases, with 371,000 men and 590,000 women.
In 2024, the proportion of widows and divorcees nationwide increased by about 1.3 percentage points, equivalent to around 1.3 million people.
Statistics showed that the divorce rate was higher for women than for men across all observed age groups while separation remained less common in Vietnam and had the lowest rate.
Nationwide, 9.3 percent of the population aged 15 and over was widowed or divorced, with widows making up 6.7 percent and divorcees 2.6 percent.
In urban areas, the proportion of people aged 15 and over living alone, including singles, widowed, divorced, and separated individuals, was higher than in rural areas, with rates of 37.8 percent and 32.7 percent, respectively.
For men, the highest divorce rate was in the 40-44 age group at 4.2 percent, while for women, it was in the 40-49 age group at 4.6 percent.
Women tended to marry earlier than men, but after 45, their possibility to marry or remarry became lower than men.
Below 45, fewer women had never been married compared to men, meaning a higher proportion of women had been married at least once.
For example, in the 20-24 age group, the proportion of married women was 2.5 times higher than that of men, 31.0 percent compared to 12.6 percent.
However, from age 45 onward, men had a higher proportion of marriages, and being single was less common for them compared to women.
In the 45-49 age group, 8.4 percent of men were single, while 9.6 percent of women remained single.
