A poor woman from north-central Vietnam had been persuaded by three local residents to sell her infant daughter, but police eventually discovered the illegal trade and rescued the days-old baby.
The three people who lured the mother, a 25-year-old referred to only as L., into selling her 20-day-old daughter are being detained by police in the Vietnam-Laos border area of Nghe An Province on charges of human trafficking.
On November 11, police pulled over a long-haul bus heading from Nghe An to Hanoi for a check, having received a tip-off about a crying baby being transported aboard the vehicle.
Cut Thi Tha, the woman holding the child, was brought to a police station for questioning.
Tha confessed that together with two other people in the province, she persuaded L. to sell her infant to a woman for VND40 million ($1,720) and the mother agreed.

The girl experienced a medical check before she was carried to the buyer, who would pay for the deal after receiving the child.
One-fifth of the sum would go to Tha and her two accomplices.
Police officers gave the girl back to the mother and required her to keep bringing her up.
A local leader said L. lives in penury and the mother sold the infant presumably because of thinking she was unable to raise this fourth child of the family, while her husband was working far away.
