T-shirts featuring portraits of U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are a hot new souvenir for tourists and residents in Hanoi ahead of the much-anticipated second summit planned to be held between the two personalities in the Vietnamese capital next week.

President Trump and Chairman Kim are poised to meet in Hanoi on February 27-28, their second meeting in less than a year after a historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

As preparations for the summit intensify in the Vietnamese capital, local businesses are capitalizing on a rare opportunity to rev up sales by launching products and services inspired by the high-profile leaders.

On Hang Bong Street in Hoan Kiem District, visitors are surrounded by T-shirts adorned with images of President Trump and Chairman Kim selling for as little as VND100,000 (US$4.30) apiece.

“Most of those [who pass by my shop] smile when they see the T-shirts,” said Truong Thanh Duc, the owner of a clothing store on Hang Bong Street.

“Many tourists are amused by the shirts and it’s a huge motivation for me,” he said.

According to Duc, such T-shirts have only been on sale since Thursday morning but they are already one of the store’s best-sellers.

Two hundred souvenir summit T-shirts were sold on Thursday alone, with the most popular design featuring portraits of both leaders on top of the words ‘PEACE’ and ‘Hanoi Vietnam – 2019’, Duc said.

Michael Landa, an American tourist, said the T-shirts give him hope that President Trump and Chairman Kim will be able to create peace between the two nations.

Not only T-shirt sellers but other businesses in Vietnam’s capital are also cashing in on the second summit between the two leaders.

One Hanoi barber is offering free haircuts to anyone wanting to copy Trump and Kim’s distinctive locks.

Bars in Hanoi are getting creative by offering cocktails with punny names to mark the high-stakes diplomacy.

‘Kim Jong Ale’, a beer inspired by the “pure streams of Mount Paektu”, and ‘Peace Negroniations’, a summit-inspired take on the classic Negroni cocktail, are two of the special drinks tourists can find these days at bars in Hanoi.
