A middle school teacher in the northern Vietnamese province of Lao Cai is being investigated for allegedly impregnating an eighth grade girl.

Police in Bao Yen District, Lao Cai Province, on Thursday initiated legal proceedings against Nguyen Viet A., 36, a computer science teacher at No.2 Thuong Ha Middle School, for copulation with a person between 13 and 16 years old, a crime listed under Article 145 of the Penal Code.

He was taken into police custody on Tuesday to assist the investigation.

The victim is H.T.H., 13, an eighth grade student at the school who is twelve weeks pregnant and says she has been in a sexual relationship with the teacher since April 2018.

H.’s family first reported the situation to local police on Monday, alleging that A. engaged in sexual intercourse with H. several times over the past year in multiple rooms throughout the school. 

The complaint also mentions that the most recent sexual interaction between the teacher and student was two to three weeks ago.

A statement given by H. noted that the teacher asked her to keep the relationship secret.

According to A.’s statement, he first became attracted to H. during the second semester of the 2017-18 school year. 

He then approached her for sex in April 2018 when he spotted her alone inside the computer science classroom.

Local authorities will conduct a DNA paternity test to confirm whether or not A. is the father of the baby.

The teacher faces three to ten years in prison if convicted.
