A border guard officer in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa was killed and two others injured after they were shot by members of a drug smuggling ring at the Vietnam-Laos border on Monday.

The deceased officer was Major Vi Van Nhat, while the two wounded are Senior Lieutenant Vu Xuan Vuong and Sub-Lieutenant Nguyen Binh Minh, the provincial border guard office confirmed the same day.

The three officers are all members of the border guard unit in Bat Mot Commune, Thuong Xuan District, which lies at the border between Vietnam and Laos.

The officers were on a patrol at around 4:30 pm on Monday and noticed a suspicious man who had just crossed the border.

They stopped the man for an inspection, not knowing that he was accompanied by a group of armed men. These men then opened fire on the officers from a distance, wounding all the three.

As they were brought to the hospital for emergency treatment, Nhat succumbed to his wounds midway.

The body of Major Nhat was brought back to his home in Bat Mot Commune to prepare for his funeral.
