One person was announced dead and another in a critical condition as they both plunged into a sewer at a traditional market in Bac Lieu City – the capital of the namesake southern province – on Tuesday.

Preliminary inspection revealed the two victims were C., a 60-year-old repairman, and P., a 30-year-old fishmonger at the farm produce and food market.

C. was hired by the management of the market to dredge the sewage system on a monthly basis or if necessary.

On that day, after going three meters down the sewer, C. started crying for help. P. heard the cry and came to rescue C.

After successfully bringing C. up to the ground, P. slipped and fell back into the sewer.

The incident was quickly noticed by nearby residents, but nobody was able to climb down the ditch to look for P.

P. was found dead 30 minutes later when rescuers arrived at the scene, while C. was hospitalized in a critical condition.

According to vendors, high tides coupled with torrential rains over the past few days have triggered flooding at the wet market and in its sewage system.

Police in Bac Lieu City are investigating the case.
