A serial traffic accident between an oil tanker and multiple large vehicles on a section of National Highway 1A passing through north-central Thanh Hoa Province killed one person and injured several others on Friday afternoon.

The accident involving a total of nine vehicles happened at 3:42 pm on the day when the oil tanker truck in question failed to slow down and rear-ended a series of other vehicles near a traffic light on National Highway 1A.

At the scene, the front of the pickup truck numbered 29H-467.21 was deformed due to a strong collision, trapping an unidentified middle-aged man sitting inside the vehicle.

Rescuers used a cutting machine and specialized equipment to bring the victim out for first aid.

After about 30 minutes, the victim was rushed to Bim Son General Hospital in Bim Son Town, but died there.

Drivers and passengers on other vehicles in the accident suffered multiple injuries and panic.

All of the nine vehicles were badly damaged after the accident.

After sweeping through the eight vehicles, the tanker truck continued sliding away and only stopped next to the north-south railway track.

Fortunately, there was no train passing by at that time.

Firefighters had to deploy means of fire prevention to help handle the damaged vehicles.

The accident caused a traffic jam for many kilometers on the highway in the direction from north to south.

The traffic police officers, rescuers and firefighters spent several hours dealing with the accident and regulating traffic to avoid prolonged congestion.
