Vietnam administered more than 514,500 COVID-19 vaccine doses to its people on Sunday while documenting 5,140 domestic infections on the following morning, higher than previous days.

Sunday marked the second most vaccinated day since the country began its COVID-19 vaccination campaign in March, only after a high of over 536,600 shots given out on August 2, according to the National COVID-19 Vaccination Portal’s statistics.

The new inoculations raised the total number of vaccinated people in Vietnam to over 9.4 million, with approximately 945,800 of them receiving two full doses.

On the same day, around 10,000 vials of Remdesivir, an antiviral drug that can shorten the duration of treatment and accelerate recovery in patients with severe COVID-19 conditions, have been distributed to hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and other southern localities.

At 6:00 am on Monday, the national COVID-19 case management system updated 5,155 new infections, of which 15 were imported and 5,140 were discovered in 21 cities and provinces.

Monday's figure is higher than that of previous mornings.

Six southern localities -- Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Long An, Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, and Tay Ninh -- accounted for 2,349, 1,725, 287, 183, 177, and 157 cases, respectively.

A total of 786 transmissions were found in the community whereas the rest were detected in isolated areas or centralized quarantine facilities.

The new infections have taken the national tally to 215,560 cases, with 2,360 imported cases and 213,200 domestic ones.

Recoveries have reached 71,497 while fatalities have hit 3,397.

Since a dreadful bout hit the country on April 27, the number of locally-infected patients has mounted to 211,630.

Ho Chi Minh City is in the front with 124,153 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 29,364, Long An Province with 10,402, Dong Nai Province with 8,102, Bac Giang Province with 5,739, and Dong Thap Province with 3,986.

By comparison, Vietnam confirmed 106 community cases in the first wave from January 23 to April 16, 2020, 554 in the second from July 25 to December 1, 2020, and 910 in the third from January 28 to March 25, 2021.
