Vietnamese newspapers go black and white to commemorate COVID-19 victims
The online Vietnamese edition of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper is changed to black and white to commemorate COVID-19 victims on November 19, 2021.

The websites of many newspapers in Vietnam changed from color to black and white on Friday in honor of the country’s COVID-19 victims.

The online Vietnamese edition of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper removed all colors from its home page and subpages on Friday to commemorate people who have lost their lives to COVID-19 in Vietnam.

Nguoi Lao Dong (Laborer) newspaper did the same, and VnExpress online newspaper also took part in the commemoration by turning it home page to black and white.

Meanwhile, Tien Phong (Vanguard) and Thanh Nien (Young People) newspapers participated by switching their logos, headers, and menu bars to black and white.

An official national-level ceremony for the memorial activity is scheduled to take place in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City at 8:00 pm on Friday.

The event will be broadcast live on Vietnamese Television (VTV), Ho Chi Minh City Television (HTV), and the TV channels of other localities.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the main event will be organized at Reunification Palace in District 1.

Religious establishments including pagodas and churches will ring their bells at 8:30 pm.

A candlelight vigil will be held in multiple districts and floating lanterns will be released along Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal at 8:35 pm.

In Hanoi, the memorial service will take place at Thong Nhat Park and will be attended by about 300 delegates, including family members of the deceased.

Local residents are encouraged to turn off their lights and light candles at 8:30 pm.

According to the Vietnam Fatherland Front, authorities in other provinces and cities can also decide on a suitable way to participate in the commemoration.

During the national commemoration, entertainment activities in the country will be limited, while TV channels are expected to prioritize airing the event.

To date, Vietnam has documented 23,476 coronavirus-related fatalities nationwide, according to the Ministry of Health.

The Southeast Asian country has logged 1,065,469 infections and 881,593 recoveries since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit it early last year.

A total of 1,060,394 local infections have been recorded in all 63 provinces and cities since the fourth and worst-ever outbreak flared up on April 27.

Health workers have administered above 103.5 million vaccine doses since vaccination was rolled out nationwide on March 8.

More than 37.8 million people have been fully vaccinated.
