Two workers died after getting vaccinated against COVID-19 in Vietnam on Wednesday, with the exact cause still under investigation.
The medical center of Nong Cong District in Thanh Hoa Province, located in the north-central region, had inoculated workers of Kim Viet Shoe Company on Tuesday with the second shots of Vero Cell COVID-19 vaccine from China’s Sinopharm, according to the local pandemic control committee.
All workers had their health screened and were advised about the side effects in advance of the vaccinations.
Following the injections, several workers began to experience complications.
Five of them suffered severe reactions, were diagnosed with anaphylactic shock, and were transferred to the Nong Cong District General Hospital before being taken to Thanh Hoa General Hospital.
Two of the workers died at 0:45 and 8:45 on Wednesday.
The cause of their complications following the vaccinations is being investigated, according to the Thanh Hoa Department of Health.
The Vero Cell COVID-19 vaccine, produced by China National Pharmaceutical Group Co. Ltd. (Sinopharm), was approved for emergency use in Vietnam in early June.
Thanh Hoa has recorded some 2,000 COVID-19 cases since the fourth coronavirus wave flared up in Vietnam in late April, including more than 1,000 recoveries and 12 deaths, according to the provincial health department’s statistics.
Around 2.4 million COVID-19 vaccine shots have been given in the province, which has a population of 3.6 million, according to the national COVID-19 vaccination portal.
