Vietnam reports 14,818 new coronavirus cases, 89,842 recoveries

The Ministry of Health registered 14,818 COVID-19 patients throughout Vietnam on Monday, along with 89,842 recoveries and 212 fatalities.

The latest infections, including 35 imported and 14,783 domestic transmissions, were reported in 62 provinces and cities, the ministry said, noting that 9,396 caught the virus in the community.

Hanoi logged 2,830 of the newest local cases, Khanh Hoa Province 795, Binh Phuoc Province 640, Hai Phong City 592, Ca Mau Province 540, Da Nang 453, Ho Chi Minh City 437, Hung Yen Province 379, Thanh Hoa Province 297, Quang Ninh Province 294, Thua Thien-Hue Province 271, Lam Dong Province 227, Thai Nguyen Province 199, Hai Duong Province 181, Quang Nam Province 155, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 133, Can Tho City 132, Binh Thuan Province 94, Binh Duong Province 55, and Dong Nai Province 46.  

Vietnam had detected 15,751 domestically-acquired infections on Sunday.

The Southeast Asian country has documented 1,908,353 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave erupted on April 27, 2021. More than 1.58 million of them have recovered from COVID-19.

Ho Chi Minh City leads the caseload with 508,247 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 291,501, Dong Nai Province with 98,791, Tay Ninh Province with 82,684, Hanoi with 70,808, Dong Thap Province with 45,761, Can Tho City with 42,922, Long An Province with 40,790, Khanh Hoa Province with 40,908, Tien Giang Province with 34,660, An Giang Province with 34,399, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 27,718, Binh Thuan Province with 27,291, and Da Nang with 14,204.

Vietnam found only 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.

The health ministry confirmed 89,842 recovered patients on Monday, raising the tally to 1,590,090.

The toll has increased to 34,531 deaths after the ministry recorded 212 mortalities on the same day, including 28 in An Giang Province, 22 in Soc Trang Province, 19 in Ho Chi Minh City, 17 in Hanoi, 16 in Dong Thap Province, 12 in Binh Phuoc Province, and the remainder in 21 other provinces and cities.  

Vietnam has reported 1,914,393 patients, including 31 imported Omicron infections, since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the country in early 2020.

Health workers have given over 161 million vaccine doses, including 1,248,099 shots on Sunday, since vaccination was rolled out nationwide on March 8, 2021.

More than 78.2 million of the country’s 98 million people have received at least one dose while upwards of 71.1 million have been injected twice.

The number of third doses – including additional primary shots for immunocompromised people, boosters, and third jabs of Cuba’s Abdala vaccine – has surpassed 11.8 million.

Many provinces and cities are immunizing children aged 12-17 against COVID-19, using Pfizer-BioNTech shots.
