Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport has asked the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to issue permits for foreign airlines to bring Vietnamese citizens home, especially from areas with large Vietnamese communities, during the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

The ministry issued the request on Monday, following the prime minister’s direction that relevant agencies completely lift all restrictions on entry for Vietnamese citizens to return home during this Tet holiday, which lasts at least a week from Tuesday.

As per his directive, PM Pham Minh Chinh agreed to the proposals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Transport to promptly license foreign airlines to run flights for Vietnamese repatriates.   

The PM asked the foreign affairs ministry to continue monitoring the situation of Vietnamese living in foreign countries and support them in returning home on flights operated by foreign airlines.

He also directed the ministry to take measures to protect citizens and to resolve urgent issues, especially during the Tet holiday.

The results of the repatriation must be reported to PM Chinh, the directive said.

The government chief also ordered the foreign affairs, public security, national defense, transport, and health ministries to cooperate with one another in receiving Vietnamese repatriates and applying appropriate health monitoring measures to them to ensure effective COVID-19 prevention and control.
