At least six people were killed and three others injured after a truck carrying cassava plunged off a cliff in Vietnam’s Central Highlands early on Wednesday morning.

The serious accident occurred in Dak Somei Commune, Dak Doa District, Gia Lai Province at around 1:00 am, according to a brief report by the provincial steering committee for traffic safety.

A truck driven by 42-year-old Huynh Duc Nguyen was traveling from Ha Dong Commune to Dak Somei Commune prior to the crash.

The vehicle, which carried cassava and a total of nine people, was descending a slope when it went off-road and was thrown off the cliff.

Rescuers promptly arrived at the scene after being notified of the crash.

The accident killed six people on the truck, including the driver, while the other three were injured.

Among the injured, two suffered multiple injuries but were not in a critical condition, while the other sustained minor scratches and were discharged from the hospital.

Local authorities performed an autopsy on the deceased victims before handing their bodies over to their families.

Khuat Viet Hung, vice-chairman of the National Steering Committee for Traffic Safety, is expected to arrive in Gia Lai Province in the soonest manner to direct the investigation into the accident.

He will also join local authorities in dealing with the consequences of the crash and offer condolences and support to the victims and their family members.
