What you need to know today in Vietnam:

Society

-- It is forecast to rain all over Vietnam this holiday weekend, according to the national weather service.

-- A fireworks display will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from 9:00 pm to 9:15 pm to celebrate Reunification Day on Saturday.

-- Authorities have detected 34 instances of laser beams aimed at airplanes taking off and landing at Tan Son Nhat International in Ho Chi Minh City from 2021 till now so they will tighten measures to ensure aviation safety during the ongoing holiday travel craze.

-- A court in southern Dong Nai Province sentenced on Thursday Pham Phu Cuong, 33, to death for dealing in drugs.

-- Ho Con Rua (Turtle Lake), a landmark in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City started being revamped on Friday, with the sidewalks around it to be renovated first and the core to follow suit later. The whole facelift, set to be finished by September 2, is estimated to cost VND15 billion (US$653,324).

Business

-- Vietnam's Masan Group said it was planning to list its retail arm The Crown X on the stock exchange of New York, Hong Kong, Singapore or Vietnam.

-- Vietnam's bun bo hue (Hue-style noodle soup) has been included in the lunch menu for students at 35 elementary and middle schools in Saijō, a city in Ehime Prefecture, Japan from this month, according to Fuji News Network. 

Sports

-- Vietnam's grandmaster Le Quang Liem finished second at the Oslo Esports Cup with 13 points after defeating the Netherlands' Jorden Van Foreest in the last match on Friday. Poland's Jan-Krzysztof Duda won the cup with 14 points following his last round victory over Canadian chess player Eric Hansen.
