The Hanoi People’s Court on Thursday held a first-instance trial and sentenced a 64-year-old man to 30 months in prison for ‘abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the state, organizations, and individuals.’
Truong Huy San, residing in Ho Chi Minh City, was convicted under Article 331, Clause 2 of the Penal Code.
According to the Supreme People’s Procuracy’s indictment, between 2015 and 2024, San used his Facebook account ‘Truong Huy San (Osin Huy Duc)’ to publish multiple posts.
Among them, 13 posts were deemed to have violated the interests of the state and individuals.
These posts garnered large numbers of interactions, comments, and shares, creating a negative social impact and posing threats to public security and order, thereby necessitating legal action.
During the trial, San admitted to being the sole administrator of his Facebook account, confirming that he alone was responsible for the content selection, writing, and publication of his posts.
He denied any intention to oppose the Vietnamese Party or the state but acknowledged that some content in the 13 posts infringed upon the rights and interests of the state, organizations, and individuals.
He expressed regret over the consequences of his writings and accepted legal responsibility for the impact they may have had.
In his final statement before sentencing, San requested leniency, stating that he fully recognized his legal violations and hoped for a reduced sentence to continue contributing to society in the future.
