The Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City assigned relevant agencies to design lanes dedicated to bicycles and pedestrians on Hanoi Highway in Thu Duc City on Monday.

Following a government resolution, the department requested that the municipal Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center coordinate with other units to draw up a plan for building lanes for bicycles and pedestrians on a section between Hanoi Highway and the parallel roads.

The new lanes will be designed to stretch from the Rach Chiec Bridge to Saigon Bridge.

In addition, the municipal transport department ordered the center to contemplate building a path for pedestrians to safely cross Hanoi Highway at the U-turn before the Cantavil building.

These two plans should be submitted to the department in July.

Hanoi Highway is the main route connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with Thu Duc City and southern provinces like Dong Nai and Binh Duong.

It was also designed to directly connect with Ho Chi Minh City’s first metro line, the Ben Thanh - Long Binh depot, the new Mien Dong bus station, and other ring roads in the area.

However, the highway has proved unfriendly to bicycles and pedestrians with no lanes for them and no crosswalks in the section from the Rach Chiec Bridge to Saigon Bridge despite the populous housing areas, apartment projects, busy shopping malls, and office buildings.
