Police in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam arrested a 52-year-old man who evaded capture for 30 years after allegedly committing a murder using a grenade at a local wedding party in late 1991.
The suspect, Le Van Nho, was eventually detained on Friday last week in the province’s Ha Long City after a hunt of more than 30 years, local police reported on Sunday.
The investigation to arrest Nho for the two charges including murder and illegal possession and use of military weapons was recently revived, investigators said.
The man, a native of the province’s Van Don District, was put on the wanted list in February 1992, around two months after he allegedly committed the crime.
According to the case file, while attending a wedding party in Van Don in December 1991, Nho and some of his friends fell out with another group of guests led by On Van Sang.
Upon leaving the party, Sang’s group, armed with knives, attacked Nho’s group, causing injuries to a friend of Nho’s.
Nho ran back to his house nearby and returned with a grenade in hand.
He then pulled the pin out of the grenade and threw it into Sang’s group, causing an explosion that killed Sang on the spot while wounding some others.
Nho escaped from the scene immediately and worked as a freelance seafarer to hide from police detection.
However, after hunting Nho for a long time, detectives successfully traced his whereabouts and arrested him.
