A video circulated online on Wednesday morning showed that a man in a security guard uniform threw away at least three public bicycles used for share services for unknown reasons when the vehicles were parked at a downtown park in Ho Chi Minh City.
The incident happened at the Bach Dang Wharf Park in District 1, according to the footage.
The man wearing a blue uniform that is often seen on security guards lifted each bicycle, moved it about three meters away from its original parking spot on the sidewalk, and hurled it down to the roadway of Ton Duc Thang Street.
The video showed at least three bicycles were thrown away by the man.
Netizens were taken aback by his act and curious about his motive.
A spokesperson of Tri Nam Group JSC, the investor of the widely-acclaimed public bicycle sharing project in Ho Chi Minh City, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper later on Wednesday that the company is coordinating with local authorities and police in investigating the incident and handling it properly.
Tri Nam has been operating a public bicycle sharing service in Ho Chi Minh City since December 2021.
It has set up 43 bicycle stations on sidewalks and at bus stations around District 1, with each having 10-20 bikes.
The sharing service has proved a success in the southern metropolis, with nearly 140,000 users having registered with the company after the first four months of operation.
However, the public bike sharing system has been hit by vandalism and thievery.
On the evening of January 15, a man blatantly stole a public bicycle from a station on Ly Tu Trong Street in District 1 by transporting it on a motorbike.
A patrol police team caught him in the act about one kilometer away from the aforementioned bicycle station and detained him for investigation.
