Many trees were uprooted while streets and houses were inundated with floodwater due to downpours and gusts as Storm Ma-on swept through northern Vietnam on Thursday evening.
Torrential rains and strong winds began battering the affected localities at around 8:00 pm on Thursday.
In Mong Cai City, Quang Ninh Province, many streets were submerged and multiple trees were uprooted.

On Lo Bat Street, an uprooted tree fell onto an automobile, but no one was harmed in the incident.
Several billboards were also damaged and blown away by powerful gusts.
Leaders in Mong Cai City advised residents against going outside on Thursday night.
A temporary power cut also took place in the city at 9:00 pm that evening to ensure safety.

As of Thursday afternoon, all boats in waters off Mong Cai City had been guided to safety, while residents in locations at risk of landslides had been evacuated, according to Ho Quang Huy, chairman of the local People’s Committee.
In other localities in Quang Ninh Province, namely Ha Long, Cam Pha, Van Don, and Co To, hours-long downpours were recorded, resulting in large-scale flooding.
Rainfall in the province was measured at between 115 and 240 millimeters.

In Hai Phong City, streets such as To Hieu, Nguyen Binh, and Le Loi were sunk under torrential rains.
Local authorities said they had suspended inland waterway transport activities as well as the local cable car service since 3:00 pm on Thursday.
As of Friday morning, many streets and houses in Hai Phong and Quang Ninh were still heavily inundated.
People had a hard time commuting and the lives of affected residents were turned upside down.

A similar situation was also recorded in other northern provinces, namely Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, and Bac Giang.
There has been no information about casualties caused by the storm.
Although Storm Ma-on weakened into a tropical depression on Thursday night, its circulation is expected to continue causing heavy rains in northern Vietnam throughout Friday, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.
