The People’s Court of Binh Thuan Province in south-central Vietnam sentenced 41-year-old Russian national Roman Nikiforov to 18 years in prison on Friday for the murder of his compatriot.

According to the indictment, Nikiforov and Vasilii Echushin, also from Russia, rented a room in Quarter 1, Ham Tien Ward, Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province.

In late January 2024, the two had a dispute over finding a new room.

Nikiforov struck Echushin multiple times on the head with a hammer, resulting in the latter’s death.

Upon realizing that his compatriot had died, Nikiforov wrapped Echushin’s body in blankets, cloth, and plastic wrap, before driving it to a remote location and abandoning it.

Nikiforov later returned to the crime scene, wiped away any traces, and disposed of the victim’s cell phone, wallet, and other belongings in an attempt to destroy evidence.

Echushin’s body was discovered by locals in Thien Son Village, Thien Nghiep Commune, Phan Thiet City.

The Binh Thuan Povince investigation police treated the case as a murder and focused on tracking down and arresting Nikiforov.

Nikiforov, a chef working at a restaurant on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street in Ham Tien Ward, Phan Thiet City, admitted to the crime during the trial and expressed remorse for his actions.
