A 26-year-old woman from the southern Vietnamese province of Binh Phuoc was fined VND70 million (US$2,973) and had her driver’s license revoked for two years for drunk driving and refusing to stop after causing a traffic accident.

The provincial People’s Committee announced the penalty against N.T.M.L., 26, who is a resident of Hon Quan District, on Monday.

On July 10, L. crashed her car into a motorbike steered by Dieu Lam, 33, residing in the same district, when the two were traveling in two opposite lanes on a road connecting Hon Quan and Binh Long Town.

The collision caused damage to both of the car and motorbike, and Lam suffered minor injuries.

After causing the road crash, L. drove away from the scene.

Many onlookers chased L. on their motorbikes, but the woman kept driving on a flat tire until it came off of the wheel.

Traffic police officers of Hon Quan District blockaded a section of National Highway 13 in Binh Long Town, about seven kilometers from the scene, and she eventually stopped the car.

The officers determined that L. committed a total of three violations -- driving in the wrong lane, hit-and-run, and driving with a level of alcohol concentration exceeding 1.041 milligrams per liter of breath.

According to Vietnamese law, the mere presence of alcohol in a person's body already amounts to a violation, while an alcohol level of 0.4 milligrams per liter of breath or 80 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood would result in the most severe punishments for drunk driving.

L. was correspondingly fined VND12 million ($509), VND18 million ($764), and VND40 million ($1,700) for the three violations.

The authorities also revoked her driver’s license for 24 months.
