Vietnam’s Military Region 5 has mobilized more than 50,000 troops and a large number of specialized vehicles and equipment in response to Typhoon Noru, which is forecast to land in the central region on Wednesday morning, the High Command of the military region reported on Tuesday.

Along with around 53,000 officers and soldiers, the High Command also deployed 108 specialized and amphibious vehicles, 1,385 military cars, 715 motorboats, five armored vehicles, and one helicopter of the T-TG 574 Brigade to respond to Typhoon Noru.

By Tuesday morning, units of the military region had supported people in the coastal provinces from Da Nang City to Ninh Thuan Province to safely anchor more than 20,000 fishing boats.

Soldiers also helped residents consolidate their houses, bring boats to shore for safe shelter, prune trees, and take other measures to protect themselves and assets from the impacts of the powerful storm.

They also coordinated with border guards in calling on boats at sea to come back to shore soon or move to safe places to avoid the typhoon.

The Military Region 5 covers 11 cities and provinces in the central and Central Highlands regions, including Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, and Dak Nong.

The military region’s High Command directed the Military Headquarters of Da Nang City and the coastal provinces from Quang Nam to Ninh Thuan to maintain their on-duty forces to timely take actions in response to the storm, including evacuation and rescue activities.

The military region set up a frontline command post in Quang Nam Province and sent two task forces to monitor preparatory works in Da Nang and Quang Nam and Quang Ngai Provinces, said Major General Cao Phi Hung, deputy commander of Military Region 5.

On Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired an online meeting with authorities of eight localities likely to be affected by the typhoon, including Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Gia Lai, and Kon Tum, to discuss measures to deal with Typhoon Noru.

Also on the same morning, many Vietnamese airlines announced cancelation of hundreds of scheduled flights while delaying many others because of the impacts of the coming typhoon.

At 10:00 am on Tuesday, the typhoon was located about 310km off the region from Da Nang to Quang Ngai, packing winds reaching 183km per hour and gusts of over 220km per hour, according to Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

As of 11:00 am on Tuesday, many coastal areas in central Vietnam, including Da Nang and Quang Ngai, were suffering from rainstorms and powerful winds, with waves reaching four meters high, as reported by Tuoi Tre (Youth) reporters from the scenes.

Within the next 12 hours, the powerful storm will move west at a speed of 20-25km per hour and may get stronger while heading to central Vietnam, the center said.

In the early hours of Wednesday, the typhoon will hit the mainland, possibly in the region between Thua Thien Hue and Binh Dinh Provinces, and then weaken gradually.
