Vietnam treasures and prioritizes its friendship and multifaceted cooperative relationship with neighboring Cambodia, State President Luong Cuong said during a meeting with Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni in Hanoi on Thursday.

The meeting took place as part of King Sihamoni’s two-day state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Cuong, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

The Vietnamese leader shared his appreciation for the Cambodian king’s visit, saying it would contribute to deepening the bilateral relationship between the two countries in line with the motto ‘good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainability.’

Congratulating Cambodia on its socio-economic achievements over the past 20 years under the reign of the king, President Cuong shared his wish that the Cambodian people would continue to achieve great accomplishments in years to come and meet its goal of becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.

He underlined Vietnam's policy of prioritizing its all-round cooperative relations with Cambodia.

In response, King Sihamoni shared his belief that Vietnam will continue to find success in the future thanks to the reformations it began nearly 40 years ago with its Doi Moi (renovation) policy.

He affirmed that the Cambodian people will forever be grateful to Vietnam for helping end the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, as well as aiding in Cambodia’s national building and development.

The king said that he will continue to work with Senate President Hun Sen, National Assembly President Khuon Sudary, and Prime Minister Hun Manet to consolidate and deepen the friendship and cooperative ties with Vietnam.

President Cuong suggested that King Sihamoni work with senior Cambodian leaders to facilitate the naturalization of eligible people of Vietnamese origin living in Cambodia, and to continue giving support to Vietnamese communities in the kingdom.

The Vietnamese leader conveyed his regards to Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk and expressed his hope that the Queen Mother will accompany King Sihamoni on a visit to Vietnam for rest and relaxation at a suitable time.

In return, the monarch expressed his desire to welcome President Cuong to Cambodia in the near future.

Also on Thursday, the Cambodian king held separate meetings with Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to discuss boosting bilateral comprehensive cooperation between the two nations.
