Students will be allowed to stay home for three days this week as this year’s highest tide submerges streets in Can Tho City, located in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

As of 6:00 am on Monday, the water in the Hau (Back) River began rising and inundating local streets after just half an hour.

The situation resulted in traffic congestion on such streets as Vo Van Kiet, Mau Thuan, and Nguyen Van Cu during the morning rush hours.

Serious flooding occurred on many streets where schools are situated, preventing parents from taking their children to class.

Many parents had to get off their vehicles and carry their kids through the flooded sections to reach their schools.

Several schools let students start classes one or two hours late when the tidal water receded.

The municipal Department of Education and Training on Monday announced that K-12 students would be allowed to stay home from Tuesday through Thursday due to peaking tide.

Schools can either switch to remote learning or provide students with make-up classes later.

The water level of the Hau River section in Can Tho City was measured at 2.21 meters high on Monday morning and is expected to reach 2.25 meters in the next two days, the city’s committee for flood and storm prevention stated.

The situation will result in serious flooding across the city, which can be exacerbated if it rains.

The Can Tho weather station stated that the city is being hit by this year’s highest tide, adding that rains are forecast until Wednesday.
