The transport authorities in Ho Chi Minh City are studying a trial plan to build three new assembled multistory parking spaces in District 1, at Cho Lon Bus Station in District 5, and at District 8 Bus Station.
The pilot parking lot in District 1 will be built on Le Lai Street, adjacent to 23/9 Park, with a capacity of 48 cars and 80 motorbikes.
Its efficiency is expected to pave the way for a bigger parking project, according to news site VnExpress.
The construction will include four rotating modules for cars and one module for motorbikes.
Director of the Department of Transport Tran Quang Lam assigned the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center to study the plan.
In addition to Le Lai Street, two other multistory parking lots will also be constructed at Cho Lon Bus Station in District 5 and District 8 Bus Station, whose locations are convenient for this type of work.
The trial of the three new multistory parking spaces is in line with the municipal transport authorities’ direction on developing parking facilities in the city center and places short of car and motorbike parks.
The assembled multistory parking lots are said to occupy less area and bear low costs compared to underground parking spaces, and can be easily and quickly installed, or dismantled and relocated when needed.
Previously, an investor proposed building a multistory parking space in the city center in 2017, but the city leaders turned the plan down over concerns about congestion and shrinking public space at that time,VnExpress reported.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has a number of multistory parking spaces, including one at 71 Che Lan Vien Street in Tan Phu District that can accommodate 2,800 cars and motorbikes and another at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Tan Binh District that can house 10,000 cars, motorbikes, and bicycles.
In addition to the multistory type, Ho Chi Minh City has planned four underground parking lots in Le Van Tam and Tao Dan Parks, the Trong Dong Stage, and Hoa Lu Stadium in District 1, with a target to hold about 6,300 cars and 4,000 motorbikes, but all these projects are still only proposals.
