Four people were hospitalized after a drunk driver crashed into three motorbikes stopped at a red light in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai, the provincial Traffic Safety Board said on Wednesday.
CCTV footage showed that one of the three motorbikes was thrown several meters from the intersection of Ly Thai To and Hung Vuong Streets in Gia Lai’s Pleiku City when the accident occurred at 9:25 pm on Tuesday.
That motorbike driver, 30-year-old Luong Ngoc A., suffered a traumatic brain injury and is being treated in the intensive care unit of Gia Lai General Hospital.
The other three victims included 33-year-old Dao Thi M., who was sent home after receiving first aid, as well as 35-year-old Luu Thi Bich L. and 10-year-old Hoang Huy V., both of whom are still receiving treatment at Pleiku City Hospital.
All four vehicles were damaged during the incident.
The drunk driver, identified as 46-year-old Nguyen Van Tuy, had a blood alcohol concentration of 1,053 milligrams per liter of breath and lacked special awareness at the time of the accident, according to officers.
Vietnam has a zero-tolerance policy for drunk driving. Any blood alcohol concentration above zero is punishable by a fine.
Blood alcohol levels of 0.4 milligrams per liter of breath or higher per 100 milliliters of blood carry the most severe penalties for drunk driving.
The case still under investigation.
