Vietnam police break up $241mn football betting ring

Police in Ha Tinh Province, north-central Vietnam have broken up a football betting ring whose transactions accumulated more than VND6 trillion (US$241 million) and have arrested 20 suspects.

Officers under the Ha Tinh Department of Public Security confirmed on Friday they had coordinated with their counterparts in north-central Quang Tri and Quang Binh Provinces to break up the illegal gambling racket.

Preliminary information showed that the ring operated an online football betting website named ag.bong88.com.

Following an investigation, a total of 120 police officers were mobilized to apprehend 20 ring members in Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, and Quang Binh Provinces.

Police also confiscated 11 cars, VND510 million ($20,500), 15 computers, 35 phones, and related documents.

Tran Quang Nam, 36, hailing from Quang Binh Province, was identified as the leader of the racket.

The ring began operating in 2020, with its transactions worth a total of more than VND6 trillion ($241 million).

The 20 suspects have been charged for gambling and organizing gambling.
