Authorities in Quang Tri Province, central Vietnam evacuated nearly 100 households in order to safely defuse a 227-kilogram time bomb detected in a residential area.
Lieutenant Colonel Ho Viet Hung, head of the sapper division of the Military Command of Quang Tri Province, confirmed on Sunday that the unit had successfully handled the MK82 bomb at a residential area in Tan Thanh Commune, Huong Hoa District.
A local resident previously discovered the bomb as he was digging to make a farm about eight meters from his house.
The bomb was situated at a depth of about one meter.
Officers under the Military Command of Quang Tri Province arrived shortly after and carried out an examination.
The bomb was a MK82 weighing 227 kilograms and measuring 1.54 meters long and 27 centimeters in diameter.
The bomb has an M906 fuse, a mechanical timer fuse that is resistant to disassembly, thus it must be handled on the spot and not moved out of the scene.
The military unit planned to remove the fuse from the bomb with a remote control cutter, then detonate the identified detonator on the spot.
The process was highly dangerous as the time bomb contains more than 80 kilograms of explosives, and the radius of damage is 1.5 kilometers.
Therefore, nearly 100 households were forced to evacuate.
After more than an hour, the military unit successfully handled the bomb in a safe manner.
