Police in Ha Tinh Province, north-central Vietnam said on Tuesday that they had launched legal proceedings against eight suspects involved in a football betting racket with transactions worth nearly VND2 trillion (US$85 million).

An investigation launched at the end of November showed that Nguyen Cong Anh, 33, living in Ha Tinh’s Loc Ha District, had masterminded the racket since 2018.

The football betting ring accumulated about VND2 trillion from transactions.

Police officers also determined seven other participants in the racket, including Tran Manh Ha, 38, Nguyen Viet Tuan, 31, Tran Trong Duc, 32, Phan Khac Binh, 31, Tran Van Cong, 33, Luy Ngoc Cuong, 52, and Do Phi Hoang, 37.

All eight have been prosecuted for “organizing gambling” and “gambling,” with Nguyen Cong Anh and Tran Van Cong under temporary detention while the remainder have been banned from leaving their places of residence.

Currently, the Ha Tinh police are consolidating documents to handle the eight suspects in accordance with the law.
